1672 Approximate date of the establishment of Kuwait town, by Barrak bin Ghurair,      Amir of the Bani Khalid.

1716 Approximate date of the Al-Sabah and other families’ arrival to Kuwait.

1752 Approximate date of the election of Sabah bin Jaber from the Al-Sabah family to      be the first ruler of Kuwait.

1760 The first wall, 750 metres long, was built around Kuwait City.

1886 The first Kuwaiti currency was minted in copper during the reign of Abdalla      Al-Sabah II.

1899 Kuwait enter a treaty of protection and friendship with Britain.

1911 December, The first school, Al Mubarakiya, was opened.

1912 The first medical clinic was opened.

1913 The first map delineating Kuwait’s borders was drawn in the Angol-Ottoman Draft      Convention on the Persian Gulf Area.

1914 The first desalination plant was commissioned.

1921 The first Consultative Council was formed.

1922 The first public library was established.

1924 The first flag of Kuwait.

1927 The first airport was built.

1928 The first periodical, "Kuwait Magazine" was published.

1930 Kuwait municipality was established.

1933 Lighting was installed in the commercial area.

1938 Discover of oil at Burgan field.

1942 The first bank was opened.

1945 "Kuwait House" was established in Egypt to look after Kuwaiti interests &      missions including students on scholarship programmes.

1946 The first shipment of crude oil.

1947 The first printing house was established.

1948 The first magazine, "Kazima Magazine" was printed and published in Kuwait.

1951 The first Kuwaiti radio broadcast.

1952 The first power station was commissioned.

1952 The first municipal plan was drawn up.

1954 Kuwait Airlines was established.

1954 The first official Gazette was published.

1957 The first population census was conducted.

1958 December, The first issue of Al-Arabi" magazine.

1960 Kuwait National Petroleum (KNPC) was established.

1960 The first official employment of a Kuwaiti Woman by KNPC.

1960 16 February, Kuwait became a Member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).

1960 9 May, Kuwait became a member of the World Health Organization (WHO).

1960 18 November, Kuwait became a member of the United Nations Educational,      Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

1961 The Kuwait Dinar replaced Indian Rupee as currency.

1961 13 June, Kuwait became a member of the International Labor Organization (ILO).

1961 19 June, The Independence of Kuwait: The Agreement of 23 January 1899      concluded between Kuwait and Great Britain, was terminated.

1961 29 July, Kuwait became a member of the League of Arab States.

1961 November, Kuwait Television started its transmission.

1961 31 December, Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development was established.

1962 20 January, The elected Constituent Assembly met to draw up the constitution of      Kuwait.

1962 11 November, The Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Abdallah Al-Salem Al-Sabah ratified      the first Constitution of Kuwait.

1962 The first Society, Kuwait Society of Engineers was established.

1962 The first women society, Kuwait Women’s Social and Cultural Association, was      established.

1962 The first consumer cooperative society was established.

1963 23 January, the first parliamentary elections in Kuwait were held.

1963 23 January, the first elected National Assembly of Kuwait convened.

1963 14 May, Kuwait became a member of the United Nations.

1963 4 October, Iraq and Kuwait sign Agreed Minutes on the Restoration of Friendly      Relations, Recognition and Related Matters.

1964 The first anti-pollution law on oil spillage was enacted.

1966 27 November, Kuwait University was inaugurated.

1967 Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) was established.

1969 1 April, The Central Bank of Kuwait was established.

1969 18 October, The first communications satellite earth station in Kuwait was      inaugurated.

1975 March, The government acquired full ownership of Kuwait Oil Company.

1976 The Social Security Law, was promulgated.

1976 The Future Generations Reserve Law was issued. It stipulates the allocation of      10% per annum of the State revenues for future generations.

1978 The first Regional Environmental Protection conference was held in Kuwait.

1980 The Environmental Protection Council was established to protect the biosphere      and conserve natural resources.

1981 The Regional Organisation for the Protection of the Marine Environment, of the      eight Gulf States was established.
